Everybody in this family loves apples and eats at least one apple a day. Yesterday we went to a nearby orchard and got a mixed bushel of sweet and tart. Today I wanted to bake with them and make applesauce for the first time. I was amazed at how easy it was!
Basically you chop and peel an apple, add some water and cinnamon, simmer for 20 minutes and then mash! I did 4 apples and 3/4 cup water. But the applesauce is all gone now and I should have made twice as much.
Cinnamon sticks remind me of my childhood. It was a special treat to have a cinnamon stick waiting in your hot apple cider mug.
Then I thought, why not use the cinnamon stick as a handle for my caramel apple!
My weakness.I love caramel apples almost more than cotton candy. Therefore, I only made one. And Andrew and I split it.
What I really wanted to test out today was this. They are applesauce cake bites with caramel and pecan. The applesauce cake was extremely moist- too moist actually for the caramel which fell right off once you popped it in your mouth. The caramel needs something to stick to. The applesauce cake would be good as a standalone dessert, but not sure about the caramel topping. Next time I will use all of my caramel for my regular old apples- it’s the perfect match to have something crispy with something gooey and that’s what makes caramel apples so delicious- the different textures play off each other as well as the flavors.
