A Sense of Wonder

Andrew met his friend Maya at Underwater Adventures yesterday. It was an expensive outing, considering the amount of time it took to walk through the place and the price of a ticket, but when I look at this picture I wonder if you can put a price on just that- wonder, specifically a child’s wonder.

Nothing makes me happier than watching a child learn through experience and watching the natural world with a sense of wonder. Except for maybe reading myself . . .which brings me to my next topic- the Pioneerland Library System Adult Reading Club! We read 12 books between now and March 13th and we get to win prizes all along the way. I did it last year and have been looking forward to it again ever since it ended.

I am a strange reader. I like to read several books at once- just in case I get bored with one temporarily I can switch to another genre or style before going back to the other ones. The club rewards readers with a prize after every fourth book is read so for my first group of four I am reading the following:

A Natural Sense of Wonder: Connecting Kids with Nature through the Seasons

The Sugar Queen (Random House Reader’s Circle)

Coming Home Crazy: An Alphabet of China Essays

The Lacuna: A Novel

This is an awesome mix of books and I am really enjoying it. I’ll be sure to let you know which is my favorite (currently The Lacuna has me hooked) but am sure they are all special in their own way!

****UPDATE**** I have just finished the books- Do yourself a favor and go out and buy The Lacuna pronto. Next, see if your library has Coming Home Crazy. Put A Natural Sense of Wonder on your wish list. Skip The Sugar Queen . . .

This is the exact opposite of my reading habits. I can’t start another book until I have finished the last.

In fact I’d read a book non-stop cover to cover if I didn’t get interrupted or fall asleep first.

And I always seem to read a book 3 times over.
